On 21 September 1992, Kenley Matheson—a 20-year-old first-year Acadia University student—disappeared from Wolfville, Nova Scotia, without a trace. Did he go missing of his own accord, as some—including the police initially—believed? Did he take his own life, as others have speculated? Or was he murdered, either by someone he knew or just met, or someone he didn’t know but came across at the wrong place and wrong time? Although there were many theories, no eyewitnesses came forward, no suspects emerged, and no leads surfaced. His bank account was never touched, and no one in his family has seen him ever since. To this day, the strange disappearance of Kenley Matheson remains one of Canada’s greatest unsolved mysteries, as investigators—from local PD and the RCMP to private detectives hired by the family—continue to be stumped by this decades-old cold case.
Ten years in the making, Missing Kenley is a 5-episode, 10-part investigative documentary series on Kenley Matheson’s disappearance. In addition to re-examining every theory of what happened to him, the documentary also delves deeply into Kenley’s full life story, and the memory of him that still resides among family members and friends. In so doing, the series integrates the “missing Kenley” case—his disappearance cum unsolved mystery—with that of the experiences of the people he left behind, those still “missing Kenley,” the earnest and adventurous young man who once wrote, quoting Jack London, “I would rather be ashes than dust…I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.” In the Missing Kenley series finale, the documentary uncovers new evidence that may provide the answer—and solve the mystery—as to what happened to Kenley Matheson in September of 1992.
